Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I’m from Long Island, New York.

Q: Can you tell us your latest book news?
A: My latest book is a poetry chapbook called DREAM HOUSE. The poems center on the theme of “home.” Joanne Gover Yoshida, my sister who lives in Japan, created the paintings and photographs that are featured in the book. My friend Aja Riggs, who lives in Missouri, designed the book, which is a hand-bound, signed and limited edition.

My second most recent book is MINDFUL MOMENTS FOR STRESSFUL DAYS (Storey Books). This is an inspirational/self-help book. It is beautifully illustrated by Kent Lew, and includes simple tips and ideas for adding joy and meaning to everyday life.

Q: Joan, your writing has been compared to that of Mary Higgins Clark and “Stephen King without the profanity” — pretty heady stuff. Tell us, how did you become a novelist?
A: Those comparisons are very flattering, and interesting too, when you consider that those authors write very different from one another. But since I happen to be a fan of both, I’ll take it. Whether merited or not.

I’ve always considered myself a storyteller. I loved making up yarns to entertain classmates. If I could frighten them so much the better. In some ways, I was shy and insecure, so maybe it was a way of gaining acceptance and approval. I also liked being the center of attention.

Anna hesitated, and then smiled. “Okay, but don’t cheat. I don’t want you to have an unfair advantage over me.” She teased back at Captain Drake.

Anna thought it would be fun to play a game and laugh like everyone else. She had purposely paired Robert up with someone else to keep him busy and away from her, but it still didn’t help to keep her mind off him. A little distraction would be great, she thought.

When Anna walked with Captain Drake and Joan she noticed that the crewmembers had already brought all the chairs, stools, and crates over and had formed a circle with them. Everyone was watching as thought they had been waiting on the three to come before they started the game.

They all gathered round the circle as the flutists started to play, then in a minute the music stopped and Robert watched as Anna rushed to find a spot. He was determined to win just as much as Anna, because it would be nice to beat this woman in one event. Robert shoved and pushed and continued along till the next to the last round, when all who were left was Captain Drake, Anna and himself.

“Okay kids, say good bye, this is the end of the line for one of you two.” Captain Drake proudly announced as the music started to play again, but he should have guessed the determination of the other two.

“Count your blessings you lasted this long grandpa.” Anna flung back, as she laughed.

“Ah, that hurt.” Captain Drake pretended to be offended.

Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I was born in Texas, lived in South Dakota until graduating from college, worked briefly in Iowa, got my graduate degree in Missouri, and returned to my family ranch in South Dakota. Since 1992, I have lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, while maintaining my businesses — the ranch and writing retreat– in western South Dakota.

Q: Can you tell us your latest book news?
A: I’m excited to be working on a book about changing communities in the West. But the most beneficial work I’ve ever done was probably during the past decade, helping to edit three anthologies of writing by ordinary Western women. Q: Where are you originally from?
A: Houston, TX, USA

Q: Can you tell us your latest book news?
A. My third book, “The Haunting” came out in July, 2004 in both print and ebook forms and has received rave reviews. Like my first two books, it’s a Gothic, featuring two little old ladies, one of whom’s a psychic, who investigate murders along with their niece, who tries to keep them out of harm’s way. The other characters in my books are the ghosts of the murdered victims, who often have their own personal agendas and vendettas.

Q: How old were you when you started writing?
A: I wrote my first novel when I was 11.
