Jamestown Brides - Chapter 7 (part 6)

Filed under: Jamestown Brides — Susan Hilliard at 4:23 am on Friday, April 29, 2005

“That’s what I love about you Captain Drake, you treat everyone equally. I’m happy to see our dress code is not shocking to you, but I’m afraid if we were in London the crowds would swoon when they saw us in these men’s breeches.” Anna announced, as each of the women leaned forward and planted a light kiss on his cheek. Then Anna smiled brightly as she listened to Barbara followed by Joan thank Captain Drake for bringing the ship through the storm safely during the night.

“Now, put us to work Captain. We’ve come to help repair the sails, and let me warn you, I’m an excellent climber. Climbed my share of trees in my day.” Anna added with a bright smile.

Captain Drake would miss these women, they have brought so much joy to the voyage, and if ever a woman did ask about being a sailor on his ship, he most certainly would hire her. He shifted his attention to the little blond who stood with Anna, she was rather pretty, and he wondered why he had never noticed her before. She looked rather cute in her baggy breeches that seemed to swallow her up. Cute indeed, he thought. He heard her say her name was Joan; he’d have to ask Anna about her later at their chess game.

“Okay Anna, if you don’t mind you can climb the rigging and help with the repairs on the main sail. That sail is so large it’s easier to repair it while it’s hanging, as long as the wind doesn’t blow up. If you notice the first sign that the wind is picking up you get yourself right down here.” Captain Drake ordered while looking at Anna, thinking that Major Marsh would not be far behind and he found the idea amusing.
